Arctic conditions at 57 degrees north

It’s been a very cold spring so far.

We continue to have frosty mornings and very cold nights, so it’s not been advisable to put out any tender plants without serious fleecing.

My “plant room” in the caravan is still full, and although I’ve planted out a few purple spouting broccoli and beetroot plants, some cabbage, kale, and some sorrel, everything else is under wraps for a bit longer. I’ve direct sown carrots and parsnips into the beds but nothing has germinated yet…. I don’t blame it.

It did give us the opportunity to make another hugelkutur bed with cut reeds as the base, as I’ve estimated that I’ve still grown too much to fit into our prepared growing space. Always a learning, eh?

Everything is heavily mulched with woodchip to try and minimise soil runoff. We’ve almost gotten through a few tonne bags of that already, and I’ve still got the paths around the beds to lay..

Small beginnings. And many learnings.

  1. Your veg garden is coming along really nicely. Are you guys growing any potatoes this year? Given the layout of your garden, you could have some sprawlers like pumpkins, courgettes and marrows.

Sensible idea to not move the frost susceptible seedlings out yet. We found that our direct seed carrots (last year) took forever to germinate, so we laid some thermal fleece on the soil and it triggered them.

    1. Yes, we’re growing a few potatoes. They’re in already in the first of the hugelkutur beds. I got my very first few leaves poking up just yesterday from the soil!

I agree that we could put in a few sprawlers, but the temperatures up here is such that we’re advised that they don’t really ripen, so I’m waiting until we have the polycrub installed. I love pumpkins and winter squash especially!
Thanks for the tip re the Carrots. Will give it a try 👍🥕

  2. Your garden is so different to my garden!! I love seeing the difference, so many new things to think about. Our main worries here are getting enough water and protection from the Summer (and Spring) heat (not to mention the ever present predators). Yours seems to be exactly opposite; too much water, protection from the cold and predators… and yet the solution is often the same.

    1. Very true! Cover, protection through mesh or mulch, and shielding are our main solutions. I’d love to see some pictures of your garden 👍
