The pictures say it all.
At least ten female red deer grazing in broad daylight yesterday evening right next to the front of the house, completely unfazed by our presence.

I think they’re beautiful, but you can see the problem for tree planting. They’d eat the lot without fencing to protect them.

We still have to decide how to manage this. There are options, but none are easy or cheap, so we’ll think further on it.

They are lovely to look at but I am glad the herd here died out quite a few years ago. Tree guards just wouldn’t stop them and I can’t afford to fence.

Look up Permapasture Farms. They have something called Bone Sauce they make. It’s applied to fruit trees as a deer deterrent. I’ve never tried it, as it’s US$, so a lot more expensive in Cdn$ and shipping, but it apparently works really well.

Thank you! I’ve heard something about this before

You have deer, we have possums, bandicoot and sometimes rats. Deer are beautiful creatures (aren’t they all), but they get in the way of your goals… or you get in the way of their goals. Either way there is a conflict. Finding a win-win solution for this conflict is beyond me at the moment, one day we might hit on the answer though, if we keep trying.

I can’t help but love to see them out there, completely wild. But somehow we need to be able to protect some of our plants from them x
