Slow days

Everything has dipped this week. I’ve noticed both husband and I gradually losing energy and becoming slower and more reluctant to do things.

I don’t know if it’s the short, cold days, the effect of this prolonged lockdown, or a combination of both, but we are drooping a bit.

Problems with the build and trying to find ways to correct the problems (thank you builders), the prospect of further supply delays and scarcity of materials, and costs going up steeply with new import taxes (thank you Brexit) have probably contributed to our general malaise and lack of energy.

We will get through this. It’s just a few slow days.

All I can do is keep morale up as much as I can for both of us.

I know that pear pancakes and lemon drizzle cake with tea later in the day won’t solve anything, but they’re sweet and comforting and do make us feel a little better.

So that’s what we’ve been doing this week. In between jobs we wrap up in blankets, drink tea and eat cake.

My way of getting through the dark days.

  1. Your cakes are enough to weaken my resolve for a little post Christmas austerity. It is really very cold, so do eat lots to try and keep warm. I don’t want to sound trite and patronising, just encouraging, anyone who has attempted a self-build knows exactly how you feel, BUT it will get better – hopefully sooner rather than later. You don’t have to be cheerful and optimistic all the time – we understand.

    1. Thank you. I am writing this as a bit of a journal to look back on so want it to be a real reflection of it all, trials and all. I know that it will get better 👍❤️

  2. Morale dropping is rough. Think of it as getting through your own personal, Gartner “Hype Curve”. I’ve also had ups & downs the past 6 months while I’ve been unemployed–looking for a new role. I find that setting “mini goals” (and achieving them) is very helpful–since the “big goal” (next job) is probably still some time away (given COVID). One of my “mini goals” was to exercise 4-5 times a week (done!). Another was to start re-learning how to play guitar (making progress–much more proficient already than when I gave up 40 years ago). This helps establish a sense of progress.

      1. And fear not. Once the world pandemic and other madness has abated a bit m sure that you will find something. You are a legend in the industry and any company would be privileged to have you on board 👍

  3. Give yourself a couple of days off… with a defined deadline for the end of ‘holidays’. I find it helps me get back into the swing of things. Although, we are feeling a bit the same here too. I think it’s the general slowing down of the human world.

  4. The weather doesn’t help. You guys have been making amazing progress so a slowdown was inevitable. After a few days the focus will come back and you’ll storm ahead again. And cake’s a greater motivator.
