The First Snows

The weather changes every fifteen minutes here on the island. Squally hail showers is what we’re getting now, although they do blow themselves out and we are left with bright, clear air that makes everything seem scrubbed and very intense.

Work on connecting water and power to the caravan has meant husband has had to dash out between the showers and work as best he can until the next flurry of rain or hail hits.

We noticed the first snow on the high mountains of Knoydart today. Winter is with us.

Heating the caravan to try and dry out the dampness is starting to work. We managed to get the inside temperature to 19 degrees centigrade from a standing start of 4 degrees this morning, and the dampness/humidity levels reduced from 80% to a much more comfortable 50%.

The caravan is single glazed and has no real insulation, which is going to make a Highland winter interesting. I think a couple of thermal lined door curtains, thick socks and our super warm quilt are going to be necessities as snowy days approach..

      1. Oh my!! I dont think it gets that cold here, even in the dead of Winter. The lowest we get is around 12 degrees C. In summer we get a few days of 43 degrees C, more and more days each year.

      2. The outside temperature in the winter gets to zero quite frequently, and sometimes as low as – 15C.remember that we’re on the same line of latitude as Alaska. We just get a milder maritime climate because of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. We have palm trees growing on parts of the island!

  1. Sitting here in my flat and even though I still haven’t put the heating back on I can only begin to imagine the temperatures you have there. We average 4-6 at night roughly and I suppose 10 during the day. I doubled my duvet last year so I have a 36 tog now and thermal socks and last christmas’s gifted fluffy dressing gown have somehow toughened me up this year. Layers and keep on moving are my advice. If you keep busy you’ll keep warm. Such a shame you couldn’t have arrived in late spring then at least you might have acclimatised with the seasons!

    1. Thank you. We’re keeping busy during the day and have a warm duvet at night so it’s not too bad at the moment. It will get colder 😊 but we’ll toughen up. 👍
