A dreich day, with constant drizzle. A friend on the island visited site to take pictures of more progress for us.
The slates are being laid.

Loving the texture of these.

The windows are also now in place.
Can’t help thinking how good this would look in black – not a look that we’d seriously considered previously.
The only challenge with a black or grey stain is that it needs maintenance every few years, and probably reapplication to keep looking good. Natural Siberian larch is left untreated and it greys naturally over the years, needing nothing further. The wood hardens in reaction to the atmosphere and weather and protects itself.
It will be ready for its larch cladding in a few weeks time and we’ll see how its weatherproof wooden coat looks “au naturele” then.

The slate roof is looking great. As commented previously on other posts, I’m so impressed with the speed of the progress. Each week another massive chunk of construction is finished.

This is definitely the way forward for modern buildings, I think. Once the cladding is on, another couple of weeks, that will have been three months from site excavation to a fully complete wind and watertight exterior. The speed is impressive! Once we get to site it will slow down, of course.

Smiled to myself as I read your comment about it looking good in black as it was the first thing I thought on seeing the picture and before reading your comment. the au natural will weather in of course either way but sure does look good in black….

It does look good in black, although staining it adds maintenance every two years versus natural which would t need anything further. Definitely food for thought!

Thankyou. They’re so much more characterful that I feared they’d be. So we’re really pleased!

Oh I do love the slate roof. Wish it was more practical for our area. There aren’t many slate mines and the tiles are a bit of a fire risk (they lift in a burn over created wind apparently). For your build , they are perfect and I shall admire them in photos.

Thank you. We nearly went with a metal roof which is what is standard these days (and a bit cheaper) but I’ve always loved slate, which is traditional for the island. Do you guys have a tin roof(metal)?

Yes, it’s standard here for rainwayer collection. Also less chance of big sheets being sucked up and fire getting in.
